At Bird’s Nest at Blackbird, we believe the best evenings start with a good story—whether they’re poured into a glass, tucked inside a book, or passed from one barstool to the next. This August, we’re stirring up a month of cocktails and conversation inspired by legends, laughter, and local pours that make it all sing.

From the page-turning charm of our reimagined Book Club to storied rums, tropical tributes, red wine reveries, and comedy that gives back—every event this month is curated with intention and layered with flavor. Each night offers a new chapter—crafted to spark connection, delight the senses, and leave you with something worth sharing. Settle in, stay a while, and let the story unfold.
Spotlight on Kill Devil Rum
With National Mai Tai Day and National Rum Day on the horizon, we’re turning our attention to one of our favorite coastal pours—Kill Devil Rum, crafted by Outer Banks Distilling. As the first distillery on the Outer Banks, this small-batch rum draws deep inspiration from local legend, maritime history, and a steadfast dedication to craft.

Named for the lore of Kill Devil Hills, these rums carry more than just a bold finish. In the days of early colonial America, drinking water was often unsafe—when it made people sick, many believed it was the devil himself causing harm. Local belief held that rum could drive out the evil, or quite literally, “kill the devil.” Outer Banks Distilling honors that tale by bottling its spirit—both figurative and literal—with each pour.
What sets Kill Devil Rums apart is the attention to detail at every stage. Crafted using only natural ingredients—no additives, no preservatives—their process begins with carefully managed fermentations that build rich, nuanced flavor. Through thoughtful barrel aging, they explore a range of flavor profiles, letting the coastal environment—salty air, humidity, and shifting temperatures—shape each spirit’s final character.
Whether you’re sipping one of their white, gold, or spiced varieties or diving into their limited barrel-aged expressions, Kill Devil Rums invite you to experience North Carolina rum with depth, balance, and a story worth telling. Try it out in Haven A Good Time, our clarified milk punch featuring Kill Devil Hills Silver Rum.
